Hangry Meaning

There is a new term that is rapidly becoming more popular and that is something called ‘hangry’, which is a combination of hunger and anger.

This can often be observed when people do not eat properly or they go long periods of time without eating. This sets up a situation where they become irritable, excitable, and react, oftentimes aggressively, because of it. So far researchers have focused on the psychological issues that hunger can produce and they certainly are valid, but there’s far more to the picture if we look deeper into the biochemical changes that occur during hunger. Calcium, Magnesium, and Sleep

Have you ever noticed that you can almost always tell if someone has not slept well? They look the part! Oh we can cover that up with an extra dose of makeup or a spray tan but the eyes and the skin tone don’t lie. Lack of sleep can make you look really bad. There are many reasons for sleep issues from biochemical imbalances, to excess stress, but one of the most common causes of poor sleep is a mineral deficiency.

The minerals calcium and magnesium are opposites that work together in a host of functions internally. One of the roles of these minerals is to prepare the brain chemistry for sleeping. When you fall asleep it’s because specific brain chemicals rise within the brain and induce the somnambulist state. If this doesn’t happen you either don’t sleep well or not at all.

The old idea of a glass of warm milk before bed helps with sleep because milk contains calcium and magnesium. Unfortunately it also contains a fair amount of calories and lots of sugar. Sugar before bed can be a problem for lots of people with unstable blood sugar levels. It may induce sleep at first but you may awaken a couple of hours later as your blood sugar starts to fall.

Menopause Awareness Month

September is Menopause Awareness Month and this is particularly important to me as I have been fighting to save women from the possible horrors of Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) due to the many side effects including several types of cancers. For decades women were given high amounts of estrogen hormone to control their menopausal symptoms. This was devastating since most women in the menopause are already estrogen dominant and need no more. The end result was an epidemic of ovarian cancer. Eventually the drug companies began offering multifaceted HRT and this helped one problem but created another. While this lowered the incidence of ovarian cancer dramatically it caused an epidemic of breast cancer, the effects of which are still being felt by women today.

All of this is a sad story simply because it could have been avoided. The majority of women in the menopause are in need of progesterone and not estrogen. By simply switching the HRT to focus on progesterone instead of estrogen millions of cases of cancer in women of this age group could have been prevented. Why did this not happen? There are likely several factors involved in that answer but I am sure one of those deciding factors was the fact that progesterone is not patent-able and as such no one wanted to use it.

Lastly, there are all natural nutrients and extracts that can often eliminate the need for HRT altogether by supporting the body’s own ability to produce and regulate hormone balances. Dr Whiting on the Dr Oz Weight Loss Show

Recently Dr Oz aired a show on weight loss and focused on different body types and how their weight loss programs should be customized. This is a big step forward from the old paradigm of “calories in and calories out” but it still didn’t go far enough. Each body type was addressed by specific types of foods and that is great as far as it goes but there is more to body typing than just food intake.

The biggest reason for obesity is a condition called insulin resistance. Unfortunately this was not fully addressed in the show. There was a group or “type” called the sugar type but nothing was mentioned about the cause of this issue, which is insulin resistance. This major problem must be addressed by food of course but also by supplementation, which was not mentioned at all. Insulin resistance can be very well controlled with key nutrients that include chromium and vanadium and two trace minerals among other nutrients.

In another segment they were showing how a psychologist worked with a sugar addict to try and break the cycle. It did not work very well. Menopause & Stress

Menopause & Stress – Complications of the menopause have their origin in several internal imbalances. Firstly there is the imbalance of hormones, namely estrogen and progesterone. Most women in the menopause with symptoms are estrogen dominant, which is why giving estrogen drugs has been both dangerous and ineffective, leading to many complications including specific cancers. Balancing sex hormones is therefore the key.
