How to lose weight?

The phrase ”how to lose weight” and “how to lose belly fat” are among the top 10 searched phrases on Google. Despite this there are more overweight people and obese than ever before in history. When we talk about how to lose weight, we are talking about some form of dietary restriction and perhaps to increase physical activity. Heart Health Awareness Month

Cholesterol does not cause heart disease – never has, never will. Granted it can be a complicating factor once the disease process is nearly complete but that risk is there no matter what the level of serum cholesterol might be. The disease process begins long before cholesterol begins to adhere to the artery walls. Free radical damage to the inner wall of the artery actually begins the process. Once this occurs, calcium, which is normally circulating in the blood, adheres to the sites where the free radical damage has taken place.

This is called calcification of the arteries. Once this has occurred, cholesterol, an essential substance for life, begins to ionically attract itself to the calcified sites. Over time the blood flow is reduced to dangerously low levels. The most direct way to address this issue is by removing the calcium buildup from the artery wall. Once this is done the cholesterol can no longer adhere and blood flow is restored.

Sugar Industry Exposed!

We have been saying it for years. Sugar is far more detrimental to your health than most fats. So why then has the medical industry continued to treat fats as evil and never really mentions sugar at all?

Cristin Kearns, researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, has discovered why, and it’s dirty.

She was able to uncover documents showing the direct relationship between the sugar industry and medical researchers during the 1960’s and 70’s. Further, Kearns details how the sugar industry paid nearly $50,000.00 to publish a paper that would link fat and cholesterol – and not sugar- to an increased risk of heart disease.

The conclusion of this and other papers submitted by the Sugar Association supposedly established that the only way to reduce the risk of heart disease was to reduce dietary cholesterol and substitute polyun-saturated fats for saturated fat in the diet. This was in 1967. The medical industry has been on a witch hunt for cholesterol ever since, opening the door for the medical profession to push dangerous statin drugs on millions of people, making drug companies billions.
During the 1980’s and 90’s we were force fed propaganda about fats and the food industry pushed all sorts of “low-fat” foods on us, which of course were loaded with sugar! Despite all this heart disease continued to increase to epidemic proportions.

Today the medical industry is slowly coming to realize that sugar, not fat, was the problem behind the heart disease epidemic after all. The sad thing is that we have known about all this since the early 1970’s. In his book “Pure, White, and Deadly”, British nutritionist John Yudkin wrote that “If only a small fraction of what we know about the effects of sugar were to be revealed, that material would promptly be banned.”

Cholesterol Does NOT Cause Heart Disease

Since this is cholesterol awareness month I thought it might be interesting to break down some of the cholesterol myths so common that most people accept them as facts. First and foremost, cholesterol does NOT cause heart disease – never has. There are no clinical studies that have ever shown this to be true yet everyone believes it.

Doctors put virtually every one of their patients on dangerous statin cholesterol lowering drugs and yet heart disease still remains the number one killer. Elevated levels of cholesterol do NOT increase your risk for heart disease if everything else is equal. In fact the vast majority of those undergoing bypass surgery for blocked arteries had normal levels of cholesterol at the time and most had been on statin drugs for months or years beforehand.

Elevated cholesterol is a sign of an internal problem however and that is in the liver. Since your liver produces as much as 80% of all the cholesterol in your body, poor liver function is at the root cause of this elevation and it is there that we should address fixing the problem. By supporting the liver and detoxifying the liver, we can normalize cholesterol levels in 3 to 6 months in most cases. If a person has been taking a statin drug for 6 months or longer it can take a bit longer to normalize cholesterol levels because the drug has likely damaged the liver and it can take longer to reverse this problem.

Cholesterol Awareness Month

September is National Cholesterol Awareness Month and we will be featuring articles on that subject. Elevated cholesterol and its role in cardiovascular disease is very misunderstood. Cholesterol elevation should be taken seriously but not generally for the reasons that we have been brainwashed to believe.

Elevated cholesterol is most often a sign of a liver problem and/or genetic predisposition and does not mean that the majority of people should turn to dangerous drugs like Statins for an answer. In most cases cholesterol levels can be normalized through natural means such a minor changes in diet and key supplements that address liver function and detoxification.

There is a concern however that lowering salt intake can be harmful to the heart. Sodium is an electrolyte and must be balanced with potassium for optimal wellness. It’s true that most of us consume too much salt and sodium but an extreme swing in the opposite direction could spell other problems.
The secret, like everything in the body is balance and ratios. Too much of anything over a long period of time can cause imbalances resulting in health issues.

As an example a study published in The Lancet Medical Journal showed that people who were healthy and without hypertension could consume up to 7 grams of salt per day without any adverse effects for disease or death, however those who consumed less than 3 grams of salt per day had a 26% increased risk for death or for cardiovascular events like heart disease or stroke.

Exercise and Heart Health

This seems like a given right? Yet millions of people do not get even a minimal amount of exercise on a regular basis. Your heart is a muscle and as such requires training to remain fit and healthy. Cardiovascular exercise is especially important for healthy hearts. In the 1970”s I was fanatically into bodybuilding and power lifting. My training consisted of two hours in the gym 6 days a week lifting heavy weight. After a year of this my blood pressure went through the roof because I didn’t balance the resistance exercise with endurance or cardio training. Once I took to jogging 4 miles 3 days a week my blood pressure problems vanished. The human body requires balance and when we pursue extremes such as total inactivity or one form of exercise over another, we can upset the delicate balance internally and go beyond what our bodies can adjust and compensate for.

The ideal exercise routine for a healthy heart would be resistance or weight training 3 days a week and cardio or endurance activities such as jogging, running, swimming, cycling, etc 3 days a week as well. By following this schedule you will provide your body with the level of activities that it was intended to receive and it will thank you for it many times over!!

Exercise need not be burdensome. The key is finding an activity that you enjoy and do it with the idea that it is good for your body. To exercise because you have to, is a negative mindset and not good for your wellness. By choosing activities that you enjoy your positive mental energy will enhance the benefits of the exercise many times over. Cholesterol and Heart Disease

The connection between heart disease and cholesterol is one of the biggest myths in medicine. The fact is that there has never been one clinical study to link cholesterol levels as a cause of heart disease – yet everyone “believes” it. The real cause of atherosclerosis or the narrowing of the arteries due to plaque buildup is a molecule called the free radical. These chemical bombs are created when cross linkage of specific substances occur. In the case of heart disease and arterial blockage the main source of free radicals comes from rancid vegetable oils!! These are the oils we have been told for decades are good for us. In fact the greatest rise in heart disease due to blockages has occurred ever since the food industry has pushed cheap refined unsaturated fats on all of us.

Cholesterol is the single most important substance in the body and is involved in the structure and function of hundreds of processes. Are Fats good for your Heart Health?

There is a great deal of misinformation about the role of fats in the diet and which fats are actually best. In essence, what we have been told about fats for the past 50 years has been essentially wrong. We are told that vegetable oils the light polyunsaturated oils are the best.

These are the number one source for the free radicals that cause arterial blockages! We are told that saturated fats such as animal fats are terrible and are at the root of heart disease. The fact is that saturated fats such as animal fats, butter, lard, coconut oil, and palm oil are ideal for human consumption. They do not form free radicals nor do they oxidize and become rancid easily. Managing High Blood Pressure

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a serious problem. Over time it can damage not only your cardiovascular system and your heart but also organs like your kidneys. There are many potential causes for hypertension from diet, lack of exercise, to genetics. Certainly obesity and inactivity can contribute to high blood pressure but sometimes even the most fit individual can have raging hypertension. In these cases it is clearly genetic.

No matter the cause it is important to manage this problem effectively and quickly. This is one instance where medication may be far more valuable than the potential side effects. In the case of genetics medication is almost always required since fitness and diet will play a very insignificant role in these people. Diet – Reduce or eliminate all polyunsaturated vegetable oils as these are the cause of free radical damage to the arteries, setting up an environment for plaque buildup. Get adequate protein daily – about 80 grams or more, and this will help.

Exercise – Obesity is a factor behind dozens of health problems and high blood pressure is one of them. The single greatest physical cause of blood pressure problems is obesity. The new U.S. 2016 dietary guidelines limit sugar, rethink cholesterol. Well the guidelines for healthy eating have been released and there isn’t much that’s new unfortunately. The dietetics industry is still trying to fit all of us into one mold – implying that their diet recommendations are universally good for everyone. This has never been true and certainly isn’t today.

Three diets have been selected as “acceptable” by the industry.

The Healthy American Diet – (didn’t know there was one) Still based on the old 2,000 calorie intake this diet offers two thousand calories, which may not be enough for very active people and can be too much for those who are sedentary or have a sluggish metabolism. Further, this diet revolves around high carbohydrates, moderate protein, and low fat. This is the same combination that hasn’t worked for decades but they keep dragging it out over and over.

The next is the Mediterranean Diet – Of the three this is the best choice for overall guidelines but still this diet plan would not fit for everyone, especially carbohydrate intolerant, hypoglycemic, and diabetic individuals as it still provides way to many carbohydrates for these problems. The Mediterranean Diet can also be short on calcium, which is easily supplemented.

The last diet is the Vegetarian Diet – Oh no here we go again, vegetarian diets are fine as long as adequate protein is ingested. This often requires food combining as most vegetable proteins are incomplete and must be combined in groups in order to be absorbable. Most vegetarians don’t consider this and more often than not, are protein deficient as a result.

Low Fat Diets for High Cholesterol

We have all seen the headlines, low fat diets for high cholesterol. Cholesterol is one of the most misunderstood substances in the body. It is essential for hundreds of functions. So important is it that the body actually manufactures about 80% of all the cholesterol in your body. The medical profession even in the light of proof that cholesterol does NOT cause heart disease keeps scaring people with the fears of elevated cholesterol. Cholesterol lowering:

As part of their program to drive cholesterol levels down, even to very unsafe levels, doctors often recommend that their patients go on a low fat diet. The low fat diet, over time, can be very dangerous and damaging to your metabolism. Low fat diets which I talk about in my special report Controlling Cholesterol and Triglycerides can cause serious deficiencies of key nutrients, which require fat for their metabolism. A low fat diet slows down your resting metabolic rate so if you are also overweight you may find weight loss harder and harder the longer you follow that type of diet program.

Consider the negatives of a low fat diet and factor that in with the fact that you don’t actually “eat” cholesterol as the majority of this substance is manufactured in the liver. There is NO evidence that a low fat diet actually lowers cholesterol levels in the long run in any case.
