Exercise and Heart Health

This seems like a given right? Yet millions of people do not get even a minimal amount of exercise on a regular basis. Your heart is a muscle and as such requires training to remain fit and healthy. Cardiovascular exercise is especially important for healthy hearts. In the 1970”s I was fanatically into bodybuilding and power lifting. My training consisted of two hours in the gym 6 days a week lifting heavy weight. After a year of this my blood pressure went through the roof because I didn’t balance the resistance exercise with endurance or cardio training. Once I took to jogging 4 miles 3 days a week my blood pressure problems vanished. The human body requires balance and when we pursue extremes such as total inactivity or one form of exercise over another, we can upset the delicate balance internally and go beyond what our bodies can adjust and compensate for.

The ideal exercise routine for a healthy heart would be resistance or weight training 3 days a week and cardio or endurance activities such as jogging, running, swimming, cycling, etc 3 days a week as well. By following this schedule you will provide your body with the level of activities that it was intended to receive and it will thank you for it many times over!!

Exercise need not be burdensome. The key is finding an activity that you enjoy and do it with the idea that it is good for your body. To exercise because you have to, is a negative mindset and not good for your wellness. By choosing activities that you enjoy your positive mental energy will enhance the benefits of the exercise many times over.
